00-0012 - ADS Error 6420

Users may get at start of the application an error messages informing about a problem with connecting to the database server ("Connection to database failed with error code 6420.").
The problem seems to be related to WIndows 10 PCs and Windows Server versions up to version 2019.

Reasons

Some of the latest updates delivered by Microsoft introduced a bug that prevents the detection of the Advantage Database Server in the local network. Microsoft is already aware of this problem and is working on a solution. Unfortunately this problem needs to be solved by installing the latest available updates for Windows Server and the Windows client PCs.

Solution

ZeeBORN has developed a workaround that allows reestablishing the connection to the database server without waiting for the necessary updates to be released by Microsoft.

 

There are 2 tools available for download:

1.ADSCheck.exe (https://downloads.zeeborn.net/ads/ADSCheck.exe) performs a basic test of the database connection on the client PC. Download the tool, copy it to the bin folder of your software installation (usually the folder where the ZeeBORN.exe is to be found) and run the tool as a normal user. If a normal connection fails, it tries to connect to the database with the workaround developed by ZeeBORN. The tool creates a log giving detailed information about the test results.

2.ADSFix.exe (https://downloads.zeeborn.net/ads/ADSFix.exe) creates a special configuration file that enables a bypass of the normal database server connection process by providing "hard coded" configuration info to the ZeeBORN application. Download the tool, copy it to the bin folder and run the tool as Administrator. After running the tool, the bin folder will contains a ADS.INI file with the necessary information for bypassing the database server detection process. If there is any problem while creating the file, the tool should give further instructions for the proper use of the tool.
